What's the Point of Math? Lecture To Discuss Real-World Decisions

Sommer Gentry, associate professor of mathematics at the US Naval Academy, will discuss real-world decisions that are based on math.

Mathematics is used to help people finish their work faster, decide which roads and bridges to repair first, help transplant candidates get matched to kidney donors.

A lecture about how mathematics influences real-world decisions" will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 19 at Stevenson University's Greenspring Campus to discuss these and other math applications, according to a news release from the school.

A reception begins at 4:30 p.m.

It's all free and open to the public, the release states.

Guest speaker is Sommer Gentry who will discuss “'her adventures' in Operations Research, a field which uses mathematics to make real-world decisions," it states.

According to the release, Gentry is associate professor of mathematics at the US Naval Academy, a research associate with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and a principal investigator with the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients. 

The lecture is the fourth annual Susan Palmer Slattery Memorial Lecture, and will be held at the Inscape Theatre, 1525 Greenspring Valley Rd.
