Open House and Holiday Washington Monument Lighting

The Maryland Historical Society (MdHS) will celebrate with a free Monument Lighting Open House from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 1 at the society, 201 W. Monument St.

The monument will be lit nearby at 7 p.m., and will include fireworks.

There will be music, refreshments, crafts for kids, reenactors and a visit from and pictures with Santa Claus. Attendees will learn about the origins of Christmas symbols, according to a news release from the society.

Free parking will be available to all visitors.

Also, admission will be free all day Dec. 1, with $1 admission Dec. 3 and 4, the release states. During those days, the museum’s professional theatrical group, the MdHS Players, will perform Civil War vignettes and lead guided tours.

For this event, the museum will be decorated for the holiday and carolers from the Institute of Notre Dame will sing.

Free hot chocolate and cider will be served, as well as homemade holiday cookies. There will be children's activities, the release states.

Also on Dec. 1, the society will open at its usual time of 10 a.m., with each exhibit will be open to the public for the full day, including the newest exhibits on the Civil War and the War of 1812, it states.

The lighting event: "A Monument Occasion," is coordinated by the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore.

The society will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 3, and from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 4.
