Welcome to the Neighborhood; Burglars Could Be Eyeing Your Vehicle; Rain Forecast

Here are 5 Things you should know this week about life in Pikesville: What you can do to prevent vehicle break-ins; Meet neighbors at the farmers market; how we welcome newcomers, and more.

Keep an Eye Out

Shomrim of Baltimore neighborhood watch group reports that overnight Sunday, the group got calls reporting that "multiple vehicles" were broken into in the Clarks Lane and Fallstaff Road areas of Pikesville and northwest Baltimore.

Check out the comments on the group's Facebook page, including this advice from a Shomrim Facebook fan: "I know this had been said before but take it from someone who lives in this area and whose car is constantly rummaged through. Keep your car clean, no trash, make it look like it is empty. Don't keep anything valuable in your car, like not even your car charger."

Vehicle break-ins happen often, especially in the Greenspring and Quarry Lake areas, I've found in my three years editing Pikesville Patch.

Police from the Baltimore County Police Department's Pikesville precinct say residents should not leave anything in plain view inside a vehicle, lock all vehicle doors and remove valuables including spare keys.

Keep an eye out for any unfamiliar people or activity. "If you can please safely get a good description of the subject(s) and contact 911 to have police respond to the area," police have said in a statement.

Has your car been broken into recently? If so, where? Have any advice? Tell us in the comments.

Welcome, newcomers

We have a few, organized ways to welcome newbies to Pikesville.

First, if you're a business, you can participate in Welcome Wagon's business that mails a gift book to new homeowners. Read about it in the Welcome Wagon blog.

And volunteers of Shalom Baltimore, a non-profit group, do one-on-one meetings with new residents to help them find their place in the Jewish community. Read about the free program in The Associated's blog.

Meet up

Looking to network? The Jewish Community Services' Entrepreneur and Business Meetup gets together each month, including at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The meeting is held at Park Heights Jewish Community Center's community room, 5700 Park Heights Ave.
