Roads Slick, Snow Piling Up

Pikesville gets more snow than expected.

At midnight Tuesday, a convoy of salt trucks and snowplows made its way north on snow-covered Reisterstown Road.

Two inches of snow or more had already accumulated in Pikesville, and the snow was still falling.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning until noon Tuesday. That's a more severe alert than the Winter Weather Advisory it had issued Monday.

"A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow ... sleet ... and ice are expected or occurring," the Weather Service said. "This will make travel very hazardous or impossible."

Indeed, the roads in Pikesville were slick, covered with heavy, compacted snow and ice. The salt being put down on Reisterstown Road made for a thick, lumpy slush.

The snow was expected to turn icy as the morning neared and the temperature dropped to 25 degrees, according to Accuweather.com's Pikesville forecast. Later in the morning, as the temperature rises, eventually to a high of 38 degrees, light rain and sleet will take over the precipitation, the website states.
