$4.3M Liberty Road Improvements Under Way

The Liberty Road resurfacing project may be complete by next year, the State Highway Administration said.

By Jeff Seidel

One of the more well-traveled roads in this area will be undergoing a facelift in the coming months.

The State Highway Administration started a $4.3 million project that will resurface and rehabilitate Liberty Road from the city-county line to Interstate 695. With this project, the SHA is hoping to improve safety and traffic flow along the area of Liberty Road, plus upgrade pedestrian access to transit services.

“The  Liberty Road corridor is a vital link for the community, serving pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and drivers,” SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters said in a statement this week. “SHA is pleased to get this project under way to enhance safety for all customers. We ask that everyone traveling the area to use extra caution in the work zone.”

Crews will spend the next two years removing and replacing sections of concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk, as well as replacing concrete sidewalk ramps and driveway aprons and reconstructing concrete bus pads underneath the pavement at 25 MTA bus stops. They’ll also repair and resurface the pavement along Liberty Road.

Gray and Son, Inc., of Timonium, is the contractor on this project.

Work began this week, and crews will close the westbound right lane at Brubar Court and Croydon Road on Sunday. The lane closure permits crews to pour two concrete bus pads for MTA bus stops.

During this project, temporary road closures may be required.

The SHA last resurfaced this section of Liberty Road 19 years ago, and this project should be complete by Fall 2014—weather permitting.
