Board Voting on Chief Communications Officer Candidate

The Board of Education will vote Tuesday night on whether to approve the hiring of a chief communications officer recommended by the superintendent.

Charles Herndon, a spokesman for the school system, declined to comment on the name or background of the candidate in advance of the meeting.

If approved, the candidate would likely be subject to a new standardized contract drafted by Superintendent S. Dallas Dance with input from the board, as first reported by Patch.

In an interview with radio host Dan Rodricks Monday, Dance said the contract would also be put to a vote and if passed—as expected—would apply to all Baltimore County Public Schools employees that warrant one.

The controversy surrounding contracts awarded by former Superintendent Joe Hairston first came to light when Dance reassigned the previous Chief Communications Officer Phyllis Reese and former Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Don Peccia. Those contracts were not approved by the board and President Larry Schmidt recently called for more transparency with superintendent appointments.

Although Peccia's previous position is no longer listed under the school system's job listings Web page, Dance told Rodricks that the search for his replacement is still ongoing.
