Is there a street in Baltimore more interesting than 36th Street, aka 'The Avenue?' If there is, would someone please tell me where it is.

There is so much to do like, shopping, people watching, walking and eating. It's that last one I'll be talking about.

I was recommended to a restaurant that opened in April by someone I thought knew what he was talking about. As it turns out, he did know. The Restaurant is Luigi's Italian Deli & Market, 846 West 36th Street. It was opened by Jeanine with an assist from her husband Brian.

Along the walls you'll find imported Italian specialty products like meats, cheeses, pastas and cookies. Two popular sandwiches are the meatballs (either on a plate or in a sub) and Luigi's Italian cold cut (mortadella, salame, capicollo, prosciuttini, and provolone with extra virgin olive oil, vinegar, field greens, tomato, sliced hot cherry peppers and grated cheese). That should satisfy any appetite.

Baltimore Magazine wrote that The Scooch (capicollo and soppressata with prima donna cheese, roasted red peppers and field greens and sliced hot cherry peppers in a balsamic dressing) was Baltimore's Best Sandwich.  Who's to argue?

Some other menu items include the pasta salad, marinated roasted eggplant, grilled portabello mushrooms, marinated chicken breast and the roast beef loin. I had the cracked pepper turkey. Luigi's does not have a liquor license, so it's BYOB. They do not add a corkage charge, good for them.

There's seating on the front porch, on the back patio and four tables inside. There is also one tv where you can watch the Orioles, Ravens and soccer. Of course soccer. Is there an Italian restaurant that doesn't offer soccer? Oh yes, plenty of parking along 36th Street.

Luigi's is open seven days ... 11 to 8 Monday-Thursday; until 10 on Friday and Saturday, and from 11 to 5 Sunday. By the way, Jeanine and Brian are from Baltimore. That means when eating there you are supporting a local Baltimore business. For more information go to luigisdeli.net.
