An Apology to Jesse Jackson

It’s time to man up – I was wrong about Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

First, some background. I wrote a column in 2008 under the title, “Winners and Losers from Election ’08” in which I listed Jesse Jackson, Sr. as one of the biggest losers of that year.

Here is what I said: “His past contributions to America are undeniable, but his future place is uncertain. Every time he opened his mouth in the past year, he said something negative about Obama. First, Jackson criticized Obama for ‘acting white’ because he was not as forceful as Jesse wanted regarding the Jena 6 case in Louisiana. Then there was the infamous Fox News open mic incident where Jackson is heard saying, ‘See, Barack has been talking down to Black people…telling niggers how to behave…I wanna cut his nuts out.’ Finally, in October Jackson was speaking at the first World Policy Forum in Evian, France. Published reports have him saying if Obama is elected as president, ‘fundamental changes in U.S. foreign policy’ will occur. He said the most important change would occur in the Middle East, where ‘decades of putting Israel’s interests first’ would end. Jackson’s reputation has been forever tarnished.”

Jackson accused Obama of “acting white” in response to Obama’s tepid response to the Jena Six, the case of six Black high school students in Jena, La. arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder for the beating of a White student. The charges were later reduced to aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy. Many believed the prosecutor filed the more serious charges because the accused juveniles were Black. As we all know, Obama has no history of taking strong positions on anything when it involves Blacks.

As much as I hate to admit it, Jackson got it right when he accused Obama of “talking down to Black people.” Everyone, including myself, eviscerated him for making the comment and accused him of being jealous of Obama. How can we forget when Obama spoke at the Congressional Black Caucus dinner a couple years ago and told Blacks to “stop complaining?” Obviously, Jackson saw something in Obama early that the rest of us missed. Now, we are paying the price for it, especially Blacks.

Jackson was also right on point with his prediction about the changing U.S. relations with the Middle East. Our relationship with Israel has never been more volatile than it is now.

The Blacks in America – along with a good number of Whites – wanted so badly to show the world that in 2008 our country could be held up as the model for true democracy and equality. America wanted to prove that anyone, regardless of background, who played by the rules and had a vision, could finally be president of the United States.

To his credit, Jesse Jackson saw beyond the rhetoric and somehow had the ability to see deep inside of Obama’s soul and tried to warn us, however clumsy, of what we were getting. So, Rev. Jackson, again I was wrong and you were right. You saw a level of arrogance and detachment from the Black community that most of us were blinded to – or didn’t want to see.

You knew he would not pay attention to the high unemployment rate in the Black community. You knew he would not spend much political capital on the high murder rate in Chicago. You knew he would continue to talk down to Black people. You were rightly ostracized for the way you expressed yourself back in 2008. But on the issue of Obama’s disdain for Blacks; you must be embraced and brought back into the fold.

We wanted Obama to win on many levels. But Jesse Jackson, you have taught us that we should never allow emotions to cloud our judgment. I’m not always right, but I am rarely wrong – and this time, I was definitely wrong.

What practical effect does that have on the unemployed?
From the BLS report this week.

Unemployment rates:
WHITES: 6.8%...
BLACKS: 13.8%...
HISPANICS: 9.6%...
TEENAGERS: 25.1%...

"In February, the number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks
or more) was about unchanged at 4.8 million. These individuals accounted for
40.2 percent of the unemployed. (See table A-12.)"

"The employment-population ratio held at 58.6 percent in February. The civilian
labor force participation rate, at 63.5 percent, changed little. (See table A-1.)"
"The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons, at 8.0 million,
was essentially unchanged in February. These individuals were working part
time because their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to
find a full-time job. (See table A-8.)"

296,000 Americans Drop Out of Labor Force in February.
"According to the report, there were a total of 89.3 million people not in the labor force, up from 89 million in January." From the BLS report.

GREAT job President Downgrade. This is the new ObamaNation Normal.

Maybe next month? Wouldn't bet money on it considering we're up to, what, 36 straight months of job growth and unemployment's at a four year low? Maybe the sequester will help you out, though. You go ahead and have your fingers crossed for America's failure, buddy.

Good try Willie Nelson. The market is up. Ask most financial advisors - why is it up? Because due to the gubmit artificially keeping interest rates low through QE (printing and journal entry of debt), the attempt is to prop up the market - as there is no where else to go. What happens when QE ends OR a triggering event - balloon pops because structurally, the country is in trouble with too many unemployable workers who cannot read or speak properly and cannot work a full or part time job due to vices. The Wall Street cons are working hard to bring the middle class folks in to fleece them one more time - but this time, these folks are not buying it. A balanced portfolio is always the way to go, but structually, we are in trouble. Eventually, when gas hits 5.00 per gallon here - maybe this summer, it will blow.
At 17 trillion in debt - a 1% increase in the interest we pay on that debt would be devastating.

"due to great job numbers coming out"??? Did you read the report? Apparently not. Did you read my post? Apparently not.

"296,000 Americans Drop Out of Labor Force in February.

36.5% of all working age people ARE NOT WORKING!

GREAT NUMBERS! Yea that's the ticket! the fewer working the more the workers must pay in tax increases.
The market is a bubble jag and will come crashing down when the fed pumping billions into the economy stops. The highs have zero practical effect on the economy.

Joe casually throws out numbers without considering what they mean - 10,000 Baby Boomers reach the age of 65 every day, now and for the next 19 years. Granted, not all of them will retire on that birthday, but do the math and that's why there are fewer people in the work force.

Maybe Joe can coax them out of retirement to keep his taxes down...

Good that Sanchez brought forward the numbers. By way of example, let's see how easy a 10% supposed unemployment rate is really a 18.2% unemployment rate? Simple example: if 1 out of 10 people are out of work that is 10%; if 1 additional other person who dropped out of the workforce is included in total people able to work then instead of 10 total people, it is 11 total people and the true number would have to be 2 people out of work out of 11 total people or 18.2% unemployed out of the entire possible set. THis is why what is NOT included in the calculated numbers is CRITICAL to a true representation. Apparently, the US has tied a 32 year low in the number of people participating in the work force. So, the unemployment rate may not have improved at all but be significantly worse.

"Economic Growth Is Likely to Be Slow in 2013"
"With economic growth subdued until 2014, CBO forecasts that the unemployment rate will remain high—above 7½ percent through next year. If that occurs, 2014 will be the sixth consecutive year with unemployment exceeding 7½ percent of the labor force, the longest period of such high unemployment in the past 70 years. "

So killing innocent civilians on purpose is unacceptable, but killing innocent civilians collaterally so you can take out one person is acceptable? That's rather odd. In both cases, the lives of innocent people have been disregarded to achieve the goal of hurting or killing someone else.

Let's see if there is any hope for you at all.

As an example, the Nazis sent innocent Jews to the death camps, starved them, gassed them, and used some for goulish medical experiments. In our prosecution of the war we killed hundreds of thousands of civilians in Germany durning our bombing raids that were focused on depleting their manufacturing base.

Are these action morally equivilant?

I think that there has been a long tradition of bracketing off murders that are committed during "just wars" and murders that are committed in civil society.

So what is the test?

Anyone who can equate intentional gennocide with the unintentional killing of civilians has some serious problems.

Before you jump to conclusions solely for the convenience of pursuing a simplistic, as opposed to nuanced, argument, let me be clear.

1. I do not sanction drone strikes in Yemen, Pakistan or Afghanistan.
2. I do not sanction U.S. military interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Mali, Syria or anywhere else.

However,
I understand, however, that policies, once initiated, are hard to reverse.
I understand that, in order to be effective in the least, foreign policy must be consistent and predictable.

I find it difficult to give an across-the-board approval of the current President's role in the current wars, in whatever form they are currently being waged.

He has conducted the country's business with much more discretion, intelligence, decency and integrity than Wolfowitz, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Bush. About that there is no question in my mind.
