"Shop with a Cop" - A great event started by Michael Schmitz in 2001, sponsored by Outback Steakhouse. It began with 25 needy children who were selected to pair with Police Officers and shop during Christmas time. It has grown to 100 plus children with each child given $100.00 to shop for themselves and or family. The event grew with Grants from the local Optimist Clubs and Wal-Mart and Outback. It has helped to build positive relationships with children in the Baltimore County area. After shopping, the children are taken to Outback for a free lunch and or breakfast.

"Shop with a Cop" is one of the best community programs ever. The children who participate come away from that day with a better understanding of how police, business owners and community leaders really do care about kids. The kids probably realize that cops prefer protecting them from criminal activity than arresting them for it. It's better to spend a little police time and expense preventing people from getting into trouble than to spend a lot more time and tax money chasing, arresting and prosecuting people who have no respect for laws or other people whom bad people victimize.
A friendly day that includes having a really neat bit of time with kids getting to sit in the front seat of a cop car is bound to help keep some of those kids from ever being put into the back seat of a cop car.
To top it all off: police, business owners and community leaders get to enjoy being good to the children and sharing in the holiday cheer it all stimulates.
To really-really top it off: the employees and customers in Wal-Mart and Outback who were there and who all learn of it latter - we all are exposed to some of the holiday cheer it gives. Thank you.
