Rita's Clerk in Owings Mills Robbed at Gunpoint

The following information was supplied by the Baltimore County Police Department. In cases were a criminal charge is noted, the information provided does not indicate a conviction.

An armed robber held up the clerk at Rita's Italian Ice in Owings Mills.

At 10:14 p.m. Aug. 14, a man armed with a black, semi-automatic handgun showed the weapon and demanded money, according to a Pikesville precinct report.

The clerk complied and gave the robber—who wore a black and white bandana around his face—an undetermined amount of money.

He is described as about 5-foot 8-inches tall with a medium build. He also wore plain, red-and-white shorts, the report states.

The store is located at 9103 Reisterstown Rd.

What's the point of telling us what color shorts he was wearing? What was his race? Any identifying scars, marks or tattoos? A limp? Speech patterns? I'm not sure how we are to remain vigilant with the rash of armed robberies if we don't have the basic information we as citizens need.

John, that was all the information the police have. And, since there were no specific, identifying characteristics listed, such as tattoos, a limp or scars, we do not list the race of the suspect.

Why not report the race of the subject?

Liberal media at it again. I guess that's why I have a "Dinner with Barack" ad on your page as well. Impressive reporting.

I agree with the above. We know the color of his gun, the color of his banana, the color and style of his clothes, how tall he is, and his build, and all of that info is utterly useless because it could describe literally any 5'8"-ish male in town.

Perhaps they refrain from listing the suspects race because irresponsible reporting in the past has lead to the injust persecution of men of "non-white" racial lineage. Unfortunately, there are a few narrow minded people that hear or read "black", "hispanic" or "arabic" in a description and it ignites their fears and prejudices. Too many times this has lead to the indictment of ALL men that fit that ONE RACIAL characteric instead of the full list of the SUSPECT'S decsription. Although a more precise description of the perp would have been ideal, one that mentions race and no other physically identifying characteristics (i.e. dark, light, hair texture/style, scars, etc.) would indeed be irresponsible and inflammatory at best.

Baltimore County police list information on crimes on their website, as well. http://www.baltimorecountymd.gov/Agencies/police/pc04/index.html

If race/color is not listed, people will automatically think of one - and we know what one they'll think of. And they may well be wrong.

Yes we knew what the race of gunman at the movie theatre shooting was before it was reported too.

Well if this isn't profiling at it's finest...I hope some of you that were "assuming" one race over another (and we all know what race that was) go look at the police blotter to see that the robber was actually a lot like you...
