O'Malley Rolls Out Gas Tax, Highlights Tough Choices
Republicans say governor's tax proposals will hurt the working families he wants to help.
Gov. Martin O'Malley called for legislators to pass a sales tax on gasoline, saying on Wednesday that the decision would be unpopular but much needed.
The governor made his comments in Annapolis during his sixth State of the State speech in which he focused on jobs, taxes and what he called tough choices.
"Asking our fellow citizens to do more will not be popular," O'Malley said. "But without anger, fear or meanness, let’s ask one another: how much less education do we think would be good for our children’s future? How much less education do we want? How much less public safety? How many fewer jobs? There are costs, and there are values."
Republicans in the General Assembly criticized O'Malley for policies they said will hurt the same middle class working families the governor said he wants to help.
O'Malley described the state of Maryland as strong in his nearly 33-minute address to legislators gathered in the House of Delegates chamber Wednesday.
But at the same time he touted the achievements of his administration over the last six years, O'Malley said that more needs to be done.
O'Malley briefly touched on the gas tax—the most anticipated portion of his message. The governor said a bill would be filed in the next couple days.
"With a growing population and aging infrastructure, we might soon pay an even steeper price," said O'Malley. "Bridges are not like trees. They do not grow broader and stronger with age."
O'Malley's plan calls for phased-in elimination of the 6 percent sales tax exemption on gasoline.
At current prices, opponents estimate that the change would add 18 cents per gallon to the 23 cents in state gas taxes.
The additional revenue would create "7,500 new jobs building needed roads, bridges, and public transit" in Maryland, said O'Malley.
"Now look, I know that every family is still feeling the hurt of this recession," said O'Malley. "The people I serve are the people you serve. I know this is a very, very difficult ask. But nobody else is going to do this for us except for us."
Seeking to increase transportation funding for construction and repair projects that would create jobs, O'Malley intends to submit a bill repealing the sales tax exemption on a gallon of gasoline—phasing it out by 2 percent each year unless the price of gas spikes.
"It's going to be an extremely tough sell," said Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr., who has advised O'Malley to meet with delegations and various elected officials if he hopes to see the tax increased at all in these difficult times.
Aware that legislators are wary of governors transferring money from the Transportation Trust Fund in order to balance the budget, O'Malley said he would like to safeguard future investments in the fund.
"My understanding is the governor is very receptive to people wanting to protect those funds," said Donald Fry, a former state senator and president and CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee. "There will be some sort of legally enforceable way to ensure the money in the transportation fund is used for transportation purposes."
Fry is also a member of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Maryland Transportation Funding, which recommended a state constitutional amendment, or "firewall,"to keep those funds from being used for other purposes.
Senate Minority Leader E.J. Pipkin said the so-called "lock box" was a gimmick.
"There are all kinds of gimmicks to get at people's money," said Pipkin, an upper Eastern Shore Republican. "The gas tax is one of the most impactful taxes and working families would have already paid."
"On one hand (O'Malley) talks jobs and on the other hand he kills jobs with higher taxes," he said.
Pipkin said most of the transportation money has gone to fund transit projects that only three percent of state residents use.
"Before we have a discussion about raising taxes we should examine how government spends the money," said Pipkin.
During his speech, O'Malley told legislators he has taken a balanced approach to managing the state's finances during the recession, including making nearly "$800 million in cuts and spending reductions in the current budget. Including those reductions, cuts in state spending total nearly $7.5 billion since O'Malley took office, the governor said.
Critics said those numbers are misleading.
"He's misguiding the public with those words and words mean a lot," said Del. Sue Aumann, a Baltimore County Republican and member of the House Appropriations Committee. "Our budget every year has gone up $1 billion and we have a perpetual deficit of $1 billion."
"The bank of citizens is running dry," Aumann said.

MTH, I have a feeling if everyone was a single issue voter and taxes were the single issue on the ballot, Republicans would do well. However, I believe Republicans bring other baggage with them. Thus, everyone votes for what they perceive as the lesser of two evils. This happens at both the federal and state levels. Just not as simple as voting for or against tax increases.

Things were good then? REALLY? Flush tax? Good? Nope. Tanking economy - while under King Bush? Good? REALLY? Nope. I don't *like* the tax increase (in fact it scares the heck out of me) BUT BUT BUT - it hits the out of state commuters and does in fact relieve us of a hike in, say, real estate taxes... or charging families for the use of school buses (they have begun to do this in other states)... or laying of a whole lot of people... or a host of other things that would be visited completely on Maryland residents. There ARE tough choices we will have to make. I for one am not for cutting jobs - whether it is teachers, cops, figher fighters, EMT's, etc. But I guess preserving jobs just makes me a "dumb democrat" in your eyes, MTH. Here is what I tell everyone who doesn't want to pay taxes and take responsibility for our state monetarily: Don't use the roads, the cops, the schools, etc (anything taxes pay for) for a year. Go without. Then come back and tell us how it went and how successful your life is. You'll change your tune when your kids are dumb as bricks, your held up at gun point with no cop insight and you have no way to get to work. Just sayin'...

We are over taxed! If they really wanted to fix things they would cut all the wasteful government jobs and departments that don't work (lots!). The majority of commuters are in-state that pay the increased tolls. Our real estate taxes are out of control as well. As far as the education, there is so much waste and bureaucracy in the system. Eliminate the waste and we could pay for the legitimate expenses and buses. We need to stop catering to all those on entitlement, and allow businesses to flourish so we can create "real" jobs so "real" consumers can grow the economy. The belief that democrats support the working man is a joke. Democrats and Republicans are 2 sides of the same coin. Vote them all out of office and get limited terms and real citizens who represent “the people” in office. Wake up!

Each politician into their corner. O'Malley in the blue corner and Pipkin in the red corner. 18 cents per gallon is not going to kill jobs except for Democratic legislators who may be replaced.
It will hurt the lowest income groups the most. Our state budget has increased 3.5% annually since 2007. It was much higher than that under Ehrlich (26% over 4 years).
The continual need to find "new" sources of income is appalling and needs to stop. Both Ehrlich and O'Malley were guilty.

Maybe if the State didn't use hundreds of millions of our tax dollars supporting all the illegal aliens that O'Malley loves so much, he wouldn't need to raise taxes.
Maybe, if all working people had to pay some percentage of their income in taxes, not just half of the working people, he wouldn't need to raise taxes,
Maybe, if Maryland wasn't such a liberal welfare state, he wouldn't need to raise taxes to support all the social welfare programs.
Maybe if Baltimore City wasn't such a corrupt cesspool, he wouldn't need to raise taxes to help support it.
I bet all these road construction projects O'Malley wants will help employ a lot of his friends among the illegal aliens.

Good point M. Sullivan. O'Malley needs to quit squandering the Maryland taxpayer's money on illegal aliens going to Maryland schools and other things he thinks the illegal aliens need. Maryland was one of the few states that allowed illegal aliens to get a valid Maryland Drivers License. What was up with that? The Feds finally (surprisingly) made the state stop giving the illegals driving licenses.
As far as creating jobs by building the infrastructure is concerned, well we hear that every time they want a tax hike that the we need to raise the taxes to build the highways, bridges and improve them. Have you noticed that a lot of states that had tolls on their toll highways quit charging the tolls once the structures were paid for? For example Virginia got rid of all the tolls on I-95 once the road had paid for itself.
Oh and rebuilding the infrastructure is going to create jobs? Are we all going to pick up jackhammers and drive bulldozers?

The States budget has increased by 5 billion over the 5 years under O`Malley. Ehrlic's spending was at 28 billion when he left office. The spending has grown by almost a billion a year since O`Malley came aboard and now stands at 32 billion. Remember O`Malley passed the larges tax increase in the history of this state! As families do the state needs to stop and control spending. When my finances are tight we pull in our belts, do without things and don't spend more then we make. I don't have the luxury of additional monies at the expense of other families. He spends, spends and spends and raises taxes to keep on spending as opposed to trimming wasteful spending. He speaks of the money spent by his admin on new school construction, yet is that not a direct result of the increase in taxes from all of us? Largest tax increase in HISTORY, doubled the amount at all tolls, raised the sales tax, doubled the fees at the MVA! So while he didn't raise our income taxes, he sure as hell had no problem raising everything else! He is planning a run for a higher office, wait and see

Freddy, you are right, but you should mention that the majority of the legislature in Annapolis are Democrats. When Robert Ehrlich was governor the legislature voted against any and every good law he wanted passed. A good example was the legalized casino gambling proposals. Originally the casinos were supposed to help the horse racing industry in Maryland. The Democratically controlled legislature led by Anne Arundel County Speaker of the House Michael Busch fought tooth and nail to keep the casino gambling bills from passing. Yet when O'Malley proposed the same basic thing there was no problem in passing the bill.
When are the "sheeple" in Maryland going to wake up? They keep voting these blood sucking leeches in power every election time. This government thinks they can spend your money better then you can. You as a citizen are too stupid to take care of your needs.

It is quite accurate with today's Republican party (nationally) though.

Vote against every bond issue at the next election. Passing these bond issues gives the politicians the OK to spend money they don't have. Then they say, we don't have the money and have to get it from somewhere. The first thing they think of ...Taxes!
Tim
2:11 pm on Thursday, February 2, 2012
Actually, I'm more favorable of bonds then of taxes themselves. Hear me out.
Bonds FORCE accountability.
What's one of the biggest gripes you hear from people about government?
- It's that you never know exactly where your money is going.
They could raise the gas tax by 18 cents, say it's for transportation/upkeep, then utilize it for something else because it's convenient. Much like how, on the federal level, our Social Security Funds have been shamelessly bled dry by numerous presidents in BOTH parties over the past 30 years. Then they have the nerve to suggest it be discontinued, cut back, or worse - privatized and given control of by the same crooks that drove this country into the fiscal abyss it's in today.
A bond, however, forces the government to use X money for the designated project. Now sure, there's some flexibility based on the wording of the bond. There's also the whole issue of efficiently spending the money. However, I'm pretty sure you won't see bond money for one thing going somewhere completely different.
If there is a bond vote and it's for something that you strongly believe in - don't hesitate to vote for it.
It's one thing to be taxed KNOWING where it's going to go, it's way different when its more taxes going to only Owe'Malley knows where (or who)

Spending more on education will not make it better education. We need teacher accountability and those students that disrupt the classroom removed for instruction in special classes and not permitted to return to the regular classroom if they repeat their disruption. We need to stop social promotion. We also need to get rid of tenure for teachers...if they can't do the job...get rid of them.
Wouldn't hurt if we tossed most of the technology out of the elementary schools and started to teach students the basics first. Once you learn to read and write and do mathematics, you can pretty much learn anything that you want and are capable of learning. But without those basics it's pretty much a lost cause.

I'm so sick of hearing Tax, Tax and more Tax. You don't hear about the politicians taking a pay cut, do you? You see, they don't pay for their gas, you do, so they don't care about you or how much it costs. Then they say we need it to fix roads. What happened to the money you collected for the roads and didn't fix them all this time? They have their own special health insurance and you have to either give up needed meds or go broke buying them. If they really cared about you they would be on the same insurance as you, pay for their own electricity, gas, insurance, cars, meds but NO. We get what we want so there is no incentive to help you or be on your side. Their legal crooks. Lets get together people and not put up with this!! Together we can win, separate we will fall. Unite

Tim. the ole rule is no longer the rule. republicans aren't necessarily rich. We are low to middle class also. Ask any prior democrat..We were raised to believe democrats are for blue collar workers and republicans for business which makes them rich.. so they thought. So now the democrats want to tax the rich more because they own a business and must be richso more people layed off and smaller business's.. Make sense? nope..

Small business? Seriously? Small businesses are like the upper middle class of two income households. They pay ALL the taxes. They make enough to get into high tax brackets, but not enough to have a slew of writeoffs.
I'm also pretty confident Obama's not interested in raising the highest level of progressive tax (39%, I think off hand) in this country. He wants the rich off the Bush tax cuts. He wants capital gains tax modified- and both of these should happen.
People will still invest. Believe me, they'll invest with a capital gains rate of 25%, because it'll still be better then the alternatives.
Also, this correlation and belief in trickle down economics blows my mind. How people can be so naive to think it still works. We're living in the offspring of it right now - and somehow blaming just Dems for it.
Heck, even Republican candidates this cycle have effectively supported this (by means of a flat tax).
The tax code is set up to disproportionately benefit the top 1-2% in this country. This needs to change.
This is why I see many people making comparisons to Owe'Malley and Obama, and it makes me laugh. I know it's just people blindly hate mongering on the Democrat label. The Obama of the past two years is far more centrist then anything out of the Elephant party over that same time period.
You guys have to remember the 6 feet of sludge he inheirited from previous management.

Arguments like "Flush tax? Again, it was your boy's signature fee-that-wasn't-a-tax." are specious at best. True, Ehrlich started it. But did O'Malley come into office, say it was a preposterous notion and work to repeal it? No. In fact, he's proposed tripling it. The only argument you can make is that if Ehrlich hadn't proposed it then O'Malley wouldn't try to increase it, but considering how he's getting pretty innovative in the ways he's trying to generate "new revenue" I'm sure he'd have come up with the idea himself eventually.
And none of that even scratches the surface about how "your boy" lambasted Ehrlich as fees = taxes during his re-election campaign and then added or increased a list of fees that he says, not surprisingly, aren't taxes.
Eric Dymond

Regarding the ICC, I agree that the toll increases in other areas of the state partially derive from this. I seem to remember O'Malley standing up there taking credit for the whole ICC thing as he does with almost every issue likely to get him face time with the public. The problem with 1 party rule is the sheep who vote the party line get fleeced.

Way to go Maryland Democrats! How can you continue to vote for people like Gov. O'Malley, Sen. Miller, Del. Bush, and all the other tax and spend liberals who are so far out of touch with the trials and tribulations of the citizens of Maryland.
If my notes are correct in just the few short days this General Assembly has been in session, Owe'Malley has asked for a 15 cent increase to the current gasoline tax, a 17.33% (1 cent) increase to the state sales tax, and now an expansion of the sales tax overall to include gasoline adding another 7 cents per dollar to the overall price for gasoline. They have not disclosed the other products and services the expansion of the sales tax will cover, but when they tried before it was 43 items including most "services" that have never had sales tax applied to them. Sales tax is supposed to apply to an actual product that is sold not a "fee" for a service provided that does not include an actual product.
So the Democrats who lie through their teeth about how they are the party that will look out for the poor and working class will pass not one, not two, but at least three tax increases or new taxes that will have the most negative impact on the poor and working class citizens of Maryland possible in this horrific economy. Way to put other people's money where your mouth is Gov. Owe'Malley. Then he says the taxes are needed to increase revenues to maintain schools, roads, and bridges.
These are not the droids you're looking for!

I don't like the 3.5% annual increase in the MD budget since 2007 either. This kind of growth is not sustainable over the long term. What annoys me is when Republicans ignore their own. Ehrlich raised the budget 26% during his 4 years and raised "fees"as well. Which is an annual rate of 6%! Local politicians have this problem of wanting to do "new" things for us which cause them to have to find new sources of revenue. Just stop.

We hired omalley and obama but they are no better and so much worse. Have you not looked at video or the list of new taxes/fines and fees under omalley? Luckily in this state, although it could take years, democrats are coming around to being normal again. They are crossing the lines. They see that maryland is so much worse then it used to be under there control. They see Obama as not the change they expected. He didn't move forward just backward. 1ke, Nice try at misleading people with a little liberal lie. Just the current gas tax alone costs the average citizen of Maryland well OVER $200.00 per year. This is based on some pretty simple math.
Current gas tax $.23 per gal. X average gas tank 18 gal. X average number of fill ups per year. 52 = $215.28 so when you add in the proposed $.15 - .23 increase to the current gas tax plus the proposed expansion of the sales tax which is also proposed to be increased from 6% - 7% this will cost the average Maryland citizen well over $800.00 per year on gas taxes alone. But why let simple little facts, truth, and logic get in the way of the liberal agenda. Right?

Paul, So what you are saying is that only Democrats are willfully breaking the law in Maryland by not possessing either a state issued photo ID or a state issued drivers license after turning 18. I guess that's possible to assume but I would assume there are people in both parties and even some of the lesser supported parties that do not currently have a state issued ID or drivers license. I would prefer to assume that requiring people to do something as simple as show a photo ID to do something as simple as vote would be far more logical than to allow people to break a law that is so simple to obey by simply going to your local MVA or MVA Express. There is even public transit that will take you there.
Paul Amirault
9:32 am on Saturday, February 4, 2012
Justabill, there is no law that requires anyone to have a photo ID. There is no evidence of voter fraud in Maryland or any other state that would ever influence an election. So what problem are you trying to solve? Analyze for a second the logic behind voter ID laws. It is simply either Democrats are trying to steal elections or Republicans are trying to suppress voter turnout. Of all the people who might not have IDs and/or the ability to get them, I would say it is probably the poor, who might not be able afford that bus ride and who probably vote democratic.
JustABill

Requiring a photo I.D. for voting just makes sense. Something as important as that requires it. There is just too many possible ways to vote illegally. There were times in the past when I voted that I was not required to show an I.D. I could not believe that they accepted who I said I was without proof.

Paul Amirault, I don't have to supply evidence that voter fraud exists. There already is proof. You can't tell me that in the past twenty or thirty years that only one or two Republicans could be elected in this state as governor. The proof is in the pudding. I am not a Kool-Aid drinker for Democrat or Republican candidates. I vote for the person not the party. I have noticed one thing though about Democrats, they don't like the real facts to get in the way of their arguments for their positions. Usually when they start losing an argument, which is almost always, they either change the subject or they get insulting. It amazes me how some people will blindly follow party line and refuse to see the truth even when it is right in front of their eyes.
There used to be a popular Italian Democratic Baltimore City Council member who is now deceased. He was famous for a saying he had and apparently his saying is still popular with today's Democrats. In his broken Baltimore accent he used to say, "My mudder always taught me that the worst Democrat is better then the best Republican." Seems like that personal feeling is still being adhered to by today's Democrats who drink the Kool-Aid.

Poor amd, it is not liberalism or conservatism that worries me, it is your blindness to simple facts. You are blinded by your rage. It has been proven throughout the country that voter fraud is a myth.
Analyze for a second, if I want to throw an election, am I going to try to get thousands of dead people to vote. Imagine, if you can, the coordination it would require. Imagine that someone would not talk. It is just not possible.
Now, imagine how would you cheat, swing an election, and not get caught? As almost every uses electronic voting, what happens after you vote? These votes are tabulated on the computer, stored and transferred via disks. You worry about the 1 vote that may walk in from the dead. I worry about the geek that changes the computer disk and affects thousands of votes undetected and alters the election.

Can you also please explain to me how even though we have had him removed from the voter rolls by providing his death certificate, he still finds a way out of the grave and back to voter registration again and again. Paul, I read that article about the Indiana Republican Secretary of State on the Huffington Post. If the guy is a proven liar and a cheat as they say he was convicted to be, then he needs to pay the price for such activity. Jail time or whatever. As I think I stated before, I am an Independent who trust neither party, Republican or Democrat. They all had a hand with messing up this country, including and especially George Bush Jr. I think if John Kennedy were alive today he would be ashamed of his party's activities. We will never know what kind of President he would have been if he could have served his full term and maybe be re-elected. As far as his personal life with the ladies, I don't care about that.

I worry about that electronic record of my vote.

Whether anyone wants to believe it or not, I don't doubt that there is hanky panky going on with the elections. Probably one of the most flagrant places is in Chicago on election day. Oh! How about this past presidential election in Philadelphia when you could see two "New Black Panthers" at a election polling place who were openly intimidating elderly people at the election polling entrance. They were in semi-military uniforms with billy clubs. They were supposed to be Federally prosecuted, but somehow the cases fell through the cracks and nothing ever came of it. I wonder why?
I was raised by two Democratic parents when Democrats were for the little guy or working class people. Things changed and then I registered as a Republican until I realized they weren't too much different then the Dems. Now I am a registered Independent. Vote for the person, not the party.

Both My parents were democrats until the day they died. I was a "LIBERAL" up until 1982. No one screamed "NO ARMS FOR HOSTAGES" louder than I did. I still have the same belief today. "YOU DON'T REWARD OR APEASE PEOPLE WHO TAKE AMERICAN HOSTAGES, YOU CAPTURE THEM OR YOU KILL THEM". Same as today. I became a republican when I saw how Reagans fiscal policies worked. Democrats point out that the deficit was TRIPLED under Reagan, and thats true. But the President doesn't have the authority to spend one penny, only congress. There was a democrat congress under Reagan. When Bill Clinton BALANCED THE BUDGET, there was a republican House and Senate. Bush spent $3 Trillion in 8 years, 6 years were with a democrat House and Senate. And FINALLY Obama, he's spent $4 Trillion is 3 years, 2 years were with a Democrat House and Senate. I'm starting to see a pattern here.

amd, the short answer is no. Waterboarding has not saved a single life. Just the facts ma'am.
You just repeat what others tell you. Using your mind is a difficult thing to do. Please try to think on your own. Analyze, critically think about what people tell you. Analyze the motives of those who espouse certain views. Remember when cigarette companies told you that smoking does not cause cancer. Look at the motives of those who attempt to convince you of their positions. What I am asking is hard to do, it is neither progressive or conservative, it is simply getting past your emotions.

Waterboarding is torture and against the law. But I'm sure you believe in the rule of law when it is convenient. There is Zero proof of waterboarding doing anything other than making prisoners believe they were going to die. We are no better than a terrorist for torturing them. Holder the worst AG in your lifetime is another opinion without fact. You cite nothing, you only spew.

Paul, I am not sure where you get your news from but even the ultra liberal Baltimore Sun reported on the FACT that water boarding was directly responsible for obtaining vital information used in tracking and locating OBL. Sure President Obama gave the final order to send the Seals into action but the reality is everything prior to that moment was due to the actions taken by the prior administration and the use of enhanced interrogation tactics. Those sir are the facts and you can run from or ignore the truth all you want but you sir are the one who is continuously making comments that are either completely false or laced with half truths. Ehrlich raised as many fees as he could. O'Malley is raising as many taxes AND fees as he can. The Maryland state government quite obviously spends TOO FREAKING MUCH.
This might be momentarily about a Democratic governor with a stereotypical tax and spend mentality, but it's symptomatic of a larger problem: This is about government being so large and having its hands in so many aspects of our lives that it can no longer sustain itself with reasonable taxation. It's time to reverse this trend.

My 2 cents on torture. Torture has a specific, legal meaning, Bamboo shoots (sp) under finger nails, hanging from your thumbs ect. ect. I THINK water boarding is not legally torture, very uncomfortable and psychologically disturbing, but I DON'T THINK it is legally torutre. I know standing for extended periods of time and being photographed with underwear on your head IS NOT torture. John McCain, an UNQUESTIONED war hero is against water boarding. If I could meet him I would ask "Did Torture work on you?" If his answer was YES, then I would suggest if it worked on him, it would work on almost anybody. If his answer was NO, then I would suggest most people are not as strong as him. Many people believe that if we torture our captured enemies, they will torture us. I suggest, regardless of what we do, they WILL torture us. Many people also say, "It hurts our image abroad". I'm convinced most countries in the world HATE us and I couldn't care less.

We all know that the government is spending our money without our permission on certain things. Most are a bunch of pocket lining crooks. That goes for Washington D.C. to different state governments. As far as waterboarding being torture, am I supposed to feel sorry for terrorists who have no qualms about showing an American citizen being beheaded on the Internet? Not hardly. We’re spending far more than we collect and the answer is NOT to simply put the screws to already struggling Maryland workers. Nobody goes home until we figure out how to get spending under control.”… THAT will be the day I find some respect for him. Unfortunately, he only wants to concentrate on illegals in college and gay marriage. Nice that he’s looking out for a handful of people... Then again, he’s obviously a liar… I’m no genius, but if: “cuts in state spending total nearly $7.5 billion since O'Malley took office, the governor said.” -why do they need to add this or any tax? What exactly does a rich white lawyer know about “tough choices”?

Frank I don't lightly say someone is lying. If you are repeating what you "heard" on the radio you are not lying, I will take you at your word and apologize. Please check facts, the reason you can't find the article is it doesn't exist.
The facts are that the Dept of HHS has ruled that institutions that are controlled by religions are subject to the health care law that they must include zero co-pay contraception coverage as a part of any health plan provided to employees. The caveat is the institution must be like a school, university, or hospital that employs people of many faiths. This is the current law in 28 states. A mainly religious employer is exempt. Some may argue it is a bad law, I would disagree as the best way to prevent abortion is to prevent conception.
The Catholic Church is arguing that this is a first amendment issue, a potentially valid argument. Interestingly enough, studies have shown that 98% of Catholics use contraception at some point. This is not about abortion.

Does EVERYONE associated with The Churches, Schools and Charity Programs forfeit "The High Ground". I think your doing it again, Paul. The children molested are the exception, NOT the rule. You shouldn't CONDEMN an entire faith by the dispicable actions of a few. The Arch Dioceses was punished, (and rightly so) for what they did. They were sued, and paid for their mistakes, and are continuing to go to GREAT LENGTHS to prevent it from happening again. Everyone has to go through a training program in order to volunteer or work at a Catholic school or church. The Program is called STAND.

Marty, read what I said, the "Catholic Church hierarchy surrendered the high ground". I said nothing about anything else. You say they wre punished? Last time I checked, what certain members of the "hierarchy" did was criminal. So the Church suffered monetary damages. An untold number of the "hierarchy" should be in jail in my opinion.
Marty Warren
7:32 am on Tuesday, February 7, 2012
I agree, some of those dispicable people should be in jail. You said hierarchy. I asked does that apply to everyone? I posted percentages about Catholic Voters + you responded about Hierarchy.
Using "Recent Headlines" as an example, I suggest "Teachers sexually assaulting children is MUCH more pevelant in public schools than in Catholic Schools". Those teachers WILL go to jail, but shouldn't the people who hired them be sued for hundreds of millions of Dollars like the Arch Dioceses was?
Paul Amirault
7:53 am on Tuesday, February 7, 2012
I would argue differently. The reason that I posted about hierarchy vs your post of voters, is that the hierarchy has determined to oppose the issue of contraception and it is the same hierarchy that hid child molesters. Thus the comparison. They are attempting to take the moral high ground when I believe it was surrendered earlier.
That said, if any public/private school system's administration hides child molesters by moving them around, they should get sued and the administrators responsible for it should be jailed. Sadly, to this very day, how many of the Catholic Church's hierarchy are in jail for hiding the molesters? The larger question is, when will the hierarchy be punished, the Church continues to be punished as the cases roll through the courts?

The Pew Research Center is a recognized non-partisan research organization. The chart above shows that illegal immigration has flattened over the last several years and not gotten worse. IMO, the reason is simply economic. Most, but obviously not all, immigrate here for simply economic reasons, both legally and illegally. The illegals tend to find the jobs not wanted by our citizens at the wages being offered by business. Those are hospitality, landscaping and construction. The legal immigrants take the highly professional jobs where the compete against less qualified citizens. Which hurts.

Back then I said "Thats true but eventually, the unemployment rate may go as high as 7%, (Having no idea it would go over 9%). IMO, it is about turf, it has nothing to do with wanting to allow illegals to cross the border. I believe the federal government's position is simple, Arizona does not have the right to control immigration under the law. The logic is once the Feds give up any right under the constitution to the States that will lead to major problems. I have a feeling every President would defend that position.
JustABill
7:40 pm on Tuesday, February 7, 2012
Paul, The Arizona law does not infringe upon the federal government's laws or their ability to enforce them, it simply provides the state government the power to enforce the already existing federal laws when the federal government chooses to turn a blind eye on those who are blatantly breaking the law. It is funny how democrats love to pick and choose the laws they wish to enforce but have no problem passing more and more redundant laws and regulations. I did not see the Obama administration try to block the passage of a bill here in Maryland last session that would greatly overstep the current federal laws and regulations pertaining to led paint on children's toys. You also did not see any democrats in an uproar when Governor Owe'Malley and the democrat led General Assembly passed a bill making it legal for an illegal immigrant to obtain a Maryland Drivers License or more recently allowing an illegal immigrant to be eligible for tax payer subsidized instate tuition. Both of those laws are in clear violation of the current federal immigration laws and are what have turned Maryland into the sanctuary state that it is.
You spout off the stats of how Obama has deported more illegal immigrants than any previous President, but you fail to acknowledge the reasons for that are there are more illegal immigrants being caught and held for deportation by Republican led boarder states and there are thousands more illegal immigrants crossing the border every day than ever before.
Paul Amirault

Bill, it is okay to give credit where it is due, I just disagree with you on both issues. I have no agenda I just try to look at the facts.
Immigration is a constitutinal right established with the federal government, not the states. That is just a fact.
I don't spout off anything, I state a simple fact. The agency responsible for deportation is ICE which is a federal agency. Hyperbole and personal attacks don't change facts. Regarding illegals currently crossing the border you state an opinion without facts to support it. You obviously disregard the links I provided.

As far as the states enforcing immigration laws which the Federal government is supposedly enforcing, why would it be a problem for the states to have similar laws prohibiting illegal immigration? Murder I would think is also against Federal Laws. So since murder is a Federally enforceable crime, does that mean if murder occurs in your state that the state government can't prosecute the murderer?
One other thing, I don't care who's feelings I hurt if I think they are intentionally trying to harm or injure our country and the American citizens. Besides, the only rudeness most politicians recognize is when they get kicked out of office by their constituents.

You say you have no agenda when all one has to do is look at your posts in this thread along with your history of posts and they can clearly deduce you have an extreme left liberal agenda that borders on socialist.
All the liberal spin in the world cannot avoid the fact that this gas tax hike hurts the very same poor, working, and middle class citizens of Maryland that Democrats portray themselves to be working for but it is blatantly obvious that simply is not the reality. If you want to debate the actual issue feel free to have at it but if you wish to perpetuate the fallacious rhetoric that has nothing to do with the real issue then please just save it for another time.

JustABill, I applaud your sentiments. You have hit the nail right on the head with many of the thoughts you have expressed. You are clear and concise in your evaluation of certain agendas expressed on this website. I forget the actual quotation, but there is a quotation which says something to the effect about certain people being so blind because they refuse to see the truth in front of them.

I would venture to say, most of the folks that agree with O'mallys tax & spend craziness are all sucking off the teat of the government. They do not want to give up whats being handed to the for free.....

Paul, I agree with you about the two edged sword. You have every right to your opinion and beliefs and opinions. Obviously no one is going to agree with any and all opinions posted on here completely. As long as the disagreements don't reach the level of personal insults, all should be cool. I will sat that at times I can become very passionate when I feel that people are so Bullheaded that they refuse to admit when they are shown clear evidence that they may be wrong and yet try to obfuscate the truth with clever BS replies.

Frank, we will agree. I have seen postings on both sides of issues that are crazy and simply intended to annoy because of the anonymity provided by the Internet. Discussion of issues and facts benefits us all.
