“We’re really going to be setting this up for growth for future years,” said tournament co-chairman Bruce Scherr. “We want to have teams come back.”

Scherr and other tournament officials have been very happy with the support they’ve gotten from local businesses and the Pikesville community itself.

For example, the will be at the tournament to help out throughout the day. Their participation is something other similar programs have liked, especially because parents and coaches want to make sure their kids will be taken care of if something goes wrong.

Scherr, who is co-chairing the tournament with Tom Crompton, also gave a lot of credit to David Kline, president of lacrosse for the Pikesville Rec Council.

For this debut, tournament organizers are trying to do some unique things. For example, teams that win or finish second in their divisions will receive custom-made medals for each player on the squad.

Scherr said they want the other programs coming to the tournament to see it, know it and eventually put it on their calendars for years to come—something that’s common in recreational sports.

“We really started conceptualizing this in January,” Scherr said. “We thought, 'Let’s just get started.' There are people who want to come here, and this will give us something to build upon.'”
