Frugal Family: Get Some Appliances Tax Free

Consumers can buy Energy Star appliances, including air conditioners, furnaces and boilers and more, tax-free from Feb. 18-20, according to the state comptroller.

From Feb. 18-20, consumers won't have to pay the states' 6 percent sales tax on Energy Star appliances, according to the state comptroller's website.

At Appliance Land in Pikesville, you can get some kitchen and laundry appliances tax free during that weekend, said store Manager Steve Myers.

That includes clothes washers and dryers, and some refrigeration.

"If its tax free, it's definitely time to take advantage of newer, energy-efficient models that can save you hundreds of dollars over the next 10 years," Myers said.

During the Shop Maryland Energy weekend, the following Energy Star products are tax free, throughout the state, the website states:

  • Air conditioners
  • Clothes washers and dryers
  • Furnaces
  • Heat pumps
  • Solar water heaters (tax-exempt at all times now)
  • Standard-size refrigerators
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Programmable thermostats
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs

Also, a tax-free week on clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less occurs every year during the second week of August.
