Five Kid-Friendly Events in Pikesville and Baltimore

Don't let the week go by without doing something special. Celebrate World Oceans Day, gaze at celestial objects, make crafts and hear some guitar music.

Plan to take advantage of our area's fun and educational resources, and give the kids something to look forward to—or to work toward!

Tuesday

1. Hear guitar jams by The Guitar Club, at Pikesville Middle School. Club members will play songs by bands such as Queen, Eric Clapton, Train, Bruce Channel, ZZ Top and Santana, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Pikesville Middle School, 7701 Seven Mile Lane, Pikesville. Families are welcome and admission is free. Call 410-887-1207 for more information.

Wednesday and Saturday

2. Attend a storytime at 10 a.m. Wednesday and Saturday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 1819 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville. No registration is required and kids of all ages are welcome with an adult. Call 410-415-5758 for more info.

Wednesday

3. Hear a story, make crafts and celebrate ocean health at the annual World Oceans Day at the Baltimore Aquarium, 501 Pratt St., Baltimore. In celebration of World Oceans Day, the aquarium will have a story reading, arts and crafts, and other fun activities from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday. It's for all ages and is free with aquarium admission. According to the The National Aquarium website, the aquarium believes ocean health starts at home. Wear blue to support ocean health worldwide. And it's a great time to visit the aquarium, because they have dolphin calves.

Fridays

4.  View the moon, planets and stars at The Maryland Science Center, from 5:30-9 p.m. on Fridays through June 26. The center is located at 601 Light St., Baltimore. The free access to view does not include access to the center itself. Call 410-545-2999 at 5 p.m. to double-check if the observatory is open, as there might be weather and visibility issues. The observatory is outdoors, so dress accordingly.

Saturday and Sunday

5. Take in music and crafts at Honfest 2011, held at 11 a.m. June 11 and 12 at 36th Street in Hampden, Baltimore. This annual event offers fun for families and people of all ages. Attractions include music, Bawlmer's Best Hon Contest, a lounge, frozen drink bar and crafts by local artists. Parking is available at the old Zurich garage at 41st and Keswick for $5, and it's a short walk to the fun, according to the event website.

Plan ahead for June 30 ...

Grade A Student Night at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. This event will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. June 30. Students in a Baltimore County public or private school, can get in free if they bring in an (required) accompanying adult, and their own report card showing three or more "As" from any grading period, according to the aquarium website. Registration is required. Adults may fill out the online registration form, print out the confirmation e-mail, and bring it to the event. Or register by calling 410-576-3833, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Space is limited. Register online and get more information.
