BITES NEARBY: Mt. Washington Tavern
The neighborhood mainstay offers light fare, a variety of entrees, delicious crab soup and the writer's favorite: grilled salmon.
For a sure bet on getting a good meal, the Mt. Washington Tavern is a festive choice when you're looking for a unique neighborhood eatery.
It's where you can hear the hushed voices of regulars mixed with the loud giggles of 20-somethings.
It's a special place. I've been there for birthday parties, wedding rehearsal dinners, and my own graduation lunch was held there, lo, many years ago.
If you're looking for a place to take out-of-towners, this is it.
The atmosphere: The restaurant has been around for more than 30 years, and even displays some relics of Baltimore history in its sleek, dark interior, such as chandeliers from the old Gayety Theater on Baltimore Street.
The food: The salads are good at the Mt. Washington Tavern, and so are the sandwiches and entrees. In fact, I’ve never had a bad meal there. Lately I almost always get the Caesar salad with grilled salmon—it’s the best I’ve found in town. And they have a tangy and delicious crab soup.
The entree menu is sizable and ranges from ahi tuna to prime rib or duck. But the menu also offers light fare, sandwiches and high-end entrees, as well as a kids' menu.
Salads range from $5.95 to $14, with an additional cost to add steak, chicken or seafood, like I do. Sandwiches and burgers are from $10-15, and dinner entrees are about $18-29. Some items are adjusted according to market price. The brunch menu makes my mouth water just reading it.
The service: The service is usually good, and depends on how busy they are.
Events: The Tavern hosts banquets, private parties, and you can make reservations online. They’re even known to let guest bartenders come in every once in a while for fundraisers.
Address: Located in the heart of Mt. Washington Village, at 5700 Newbury St.
Hours: Monday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The bar is open until 2 a.m.
