In its inaugural year, Giving Tuesday proved a major success for the community with THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore raising more than $1 million in one day.
Those funds will go towards THE ASSOCIATED’s annual campaign, helping to support educational, humanitarian, health cultural, religious and social service needs of the Jewish community locally, nationally, in Israel and around the world.
“We are thrilled at how responsive our community was to the philanthropic message of Giving Tuesday,” said Marc B. Terrill, president of THE ASSOCIATED. “It is through their generosity, that we are able to provide needed services for vulnerable populations as well as strengthen our Jewish community.”
In addition to raising money, THE ASSOCIATED spent Giving Tuesday giving back to the broader community by making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Health Care for the Homeless. The organization provides health-related services, education, and advocacy to reduce the incidence and burdens of homelessness.
Giving Tuesday is a national initiative which was first launched this year. It was designed to redirect some of the conversation of the holiday season away from merely purchasing gifts to one of giving back. The concept behind the campaign was there is Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and now a national day for giving
The idea for Giving Tuesday came from the 92nd Street Y, a Jewish community and cultural center in New York, who worked in conjunction with the United Nations Foundation.
